What’s the largest international sporting event in the world?
The Olympic Games, of course! Vancouver played host to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, with BCLC supporting from the bidding process right through to the closing ceremonies.
Determined to play a pivotal role in bringing the 2010 Olympic Winter Games to Vancouver, BCLC became an Official Supporter of the Vancouver Organizing Committee’s (VANOC) bid for the Games. BCLC joined a team of corporate supporters to become the bid’s second founding supporter with a commitment of $1.5 million. BCLC was actively involved in recruiting volunteers to support the bid.
Following the announcement of Vancouver as the host city, BCLC made the most this unique opportunity by tailoring lottery games, sponsorship opportunities, marketing programs and incentives to help bring the spirit of the Games to communities throughout British Columbia.
During the Winter Games, Vancouver played host to over 2,600 athletes, 82 nations and 86 different events. It was an exciting time for Vancouver and Canada broke the record at the time for the most gold medals won at a single Winter Olympics!
In addition to BCLC’s support of the Games, the City of Richmond committed $50 million of the gaming revenue it received for hosting the River Rock Casino Resort to help fund construction of the Richmond Oval and its continued renovations. The Richmond Oval is an indoor multi-sport centre and fitness facility which remains a landmark of the community, embodying “sport, health, wellness, and entertainment-all under one roof.” The Oval has been key in driving tourism, helping the city of Richmond attract millions of visitors each year. This is just one way gaming revenue generated with BCLC is used to support communities across the province.
BCLC is proud to be a part of this landmark moment in Canadian history.
